General Orders, August 3, 1776

"The General is sorry to be informed that the foolish and wicked practice of profane cursing and swearing, a vice hitherto little known in our American Army is growing into fashion. He hopes that the officers will, by example as well as influence, endeavor to check it and that both they and the men will reflect that we can little hope of the blessing of Heaven on our army if we insult it by our impiety and folly. Added to this it is a vice so mean and low without any temptation that every man of sense and character detests and despises it."

What President Washington said about profanity is fascinating. Fast forward 250 years and profanity is the norm. Our nations values have been eroded by Satan's wicked schemes to slowly corrupt and influence the minds of the youth. He once had a grip on my mind, I have broken free by the power of Jesus Christ's blood and through his grace and mercy.

I am not innocent of refraining from profanity, but I have cut down this vice to a minimum. George Washington was said to have cussed in battle, but it was a surprise to his troops.

I know many people in my life that still use profanity and see no issue in it. Who am I to judge? All I can hope for is that the Holy Spirit would convict their hearts.

There is power in words because there is power in God's Word.

Hebrews 4:12 KJV

"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."

Hebrews 4:12 is a powerful verse. When you carry around your Bible, you carry a sword that is able to pierce and to do surgery to another man's heart in real time.

Isaiah 55:11 KJV

"So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing wherto I sent it."

Another powerful verse that demonstrates the authority and effectiveness of God's Word.

Matthew 7:29 KJV

"For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes."

Jesus Christ was the ultimate preacher. "Never man spake like this man." (John 7:46)

Conclusion

In conclusion, George Washington was on point about profanity. None of us can say we are innocent from profanity, but can we acknowledge that God may not be pleased with it?
